Abstract

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder with a wide variety of symptoms which negatively affect patients’ social functioning and increase their self-stigma. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of psycho-educational program on social functioning and self-stigma among schizophrenic patients. Research design: Quasi-experimental research design was utilized to achieve the study,s aim. Subjects and setting: 50 male and female schizophrenic patients at Minia Hospital for Mental Health and addiction treatment were included. Study tools: Personal and clinical data questionnaire, Social Functioning Scale, and Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale were utilized. Results: Statistically significant increase was found in social functioning scores at post and follow up tests compared to pre-test. Conversely, statistically significant decraese was found in self-stigma score at post and follow up tests compared to the pre-test. Also, a negative correlation was found between social functioning and self-stigma. Conclusion: Psycho-educational program was effective in enhancing schizophrenic patients’ social functioning and reducing their self-stigma. Recommendations: Continuous provision of psycho-educational programs was recommended for schizophrenic patients to increase their social functioning and decrease their self-stigma.
