Abstract

Deciphering the main subsurface structures that control the sedimentary basins from magnetic and gravity data is important as initial stage for hydrocarbon exploration. The area east of Qattara Depression was studied for deducing the subsurface structural outline using gravity and magnetic data. Regional-residual separation, trend analysis, tilt derivative, spectral analysis, and coupled gravity/magnetic modeling were utilized to achieve this main goal. Fast Fourier transform was used to evaluate the main basins and highs via the separation of the residual component from the regional ones. Most of the structural patterns of the research area were outlined using the lineament analysis. The potential field data include the Bouguer gravity and the total field intensity aeromagnetic maps. The available gravity and magnetic data were used to carry out the qualitative and quantitative interpretation through integration of some geophysical interpretational techniques. The Qualitative interpretation includes the visual inspection of the Bouguer gravity and RTP anomaly maps through description of the shapes, trends, and characteristic features of each anomaly as relative locations, amplitudes, elongations, areal extents as well as the sharpness to get a rapid and rough concept about the geological structure of the study area. Quantitatively, the potential field data was treated and processed, using various analytical methods to determine different geologic constraints including position, shape, depth, thickness, and composition of the sources as well as to obtain information about the degree and orientation of the tectonic stages.
