Abstract

Cognition stands as a fundamental aspect of understanding how learning, memory, and adaptability shape human and animal behavior. Delving into cognitive performance allows us to explore mental processes like perception, memory retention decision-making, and innovative problem-solving. These cognitive mechanisms are vital for daily survival, enabling tasks such as navigating environments and avoiding potential threats. Therefore, assessing cognitive performance becomes a key tool in identifying changes due to genetic variations, drug interventions, and other external factors.Cognitive testing has proven invaluable in studying how the environment influences cognitive abilities in mice (Lambert et al., 2005; Garthe et al., 2016). It has also allowed us to examine the impact of genetic mutations on learning and memory (Auerbach et al 2011) and assess the effectiveness of drug treatments targeting cognitive impairments (da Costa et al., 2017). Additionally, cognitive testing sheds light on how aging affects cognitive functions, which has implications for understanding similar decline in humans Rapp et al., 2002).
