Abstract

Uveitis is composed of various groups of disease entities, which in total has been evaluated to cause nearly 10% of blindness. Uveitis is mostly classified into anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis based on the anatomical effect of the eye. The commonest form of uveitis is anterior uveitis with different incidences reported in worldwide literature.
In developed and developing countries uveitis is a vital cause of blindness in children. Late diagnosis, insufficient treatment, and risk of amblyopia are some of the factors that are unique to childhood uveitis and are responsible for major morbidity seen with this disease.
The aim of this study is to assess health-related quality of life in children suffering from chronic uveitis. This study aimed to focus on ocular problems of chronic uveitis which affect quality of life in children and to minimize these problems which have burden on children and their families as well as consequently on community.
Health-related quality of life was assessed using validated and standardized psychometric instrument. The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory version 4.0 (PedsQL) is a brief, standardized, generic assessment instrument that systematically assesses patients’ and parents’ perceptions of HRQOL in pediatric patients with chronic health conditions.
A case-control study included children who have chronic anterior uveitis recruited from the ophthalmology department in Menoufia University and Tanta ophthalmology hospital.
The study included 2 groups:
1- Cases: twenty children suffering from chronic anterior uveitis.
2- Controls: twenty children without chronic uveitis as controls.
Statistical analysis revealed the following:
1- The mean age of cases was 13.45 ± 1.95, and the mean age of controls was 12.65 ± 1.04 (p=0.118). Among cases, 85% were males and 15 % were females while among controls, 80% were males and 20% were females (p=1.00) .Most cases and controls are resident at rural area. 2- Controls had significantly better both uncorrected (UCVA) and bestcorrected visual acuities (BCVA) than cases. 3- The mean intraocular pressure (IOP) was 12.60 ± 6.13(mm Hg) among cases and 10.79 ± 1.08 (mmHg) among controls, without any significant difference between the two groups (p=0.115). 4- Cases had significantly higher scores of the three child domains. There was no significant difference between the two groups concerning the last child-domain (About school). 5- There was no significant difference between the two groups concerning different parent’s domains. 6- Among cases, there was no significant correlation between UCVA, BCVA, or disease duration and any of the child or parents domains.
