Abstract Canal seepage losses are an important cause of irrigation water losses. Seepage losses are particularly problematic and can significantly decrease water use efficiency of farms. Seepage losses from the unlined irrigation canals account for a large fraction of total volume of the water diverted for the agricultural use, and the reduction of these seepage losses can provide significant the water quantity and the water quality benefits. Quantifying the seepage losses in irrigation canals and identifying areas where the seepage loss is most noTable are crucial for determining potential benefits of using the seepage reduction technologies and materials. However, the seepage from unlined irrigation canals is an important source of the groundwater recharge for the shallow aquifers in many areas of the world, especially in the arid and the semi-arid regions such as Egypt. |
