Abstract

Many fetal parameters can be measured by ultrasonography and have been correlated with gestational age. Ultrasonography has become the principal mean by which fetal well-being is monitored. The biometric parameters used most frequently to evaluate fetal growth like the fetal biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), transcerebellar diameter (TCD) and femur length (FL). Precise knowledge of gestational age is required to accurately utilize these biometric parameters to assess the fetal growth. (Gardosi et al., 2019)
The accurate knowledge of gestational age is a key stone in an obstetrician’s ability to successfully manage the antepartum care of a patient and is of critical importance in successful planning of appropriate therapy or intervention. Failure can result in iatrogenic prematurity which is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Ultrasonography of fetal measurements are highly reliable in the first and second trimester of pregnancy but reliability of any ultrasound method greatly diminishes as gestation advances.
