Abstract

Stroke is the sudden loss of blood flow to an area of the brain resulting in focal neurological damage which causes functional neurological deficit. It is caused either by infarction (thrombosis or
embolism that causes occlution of cerebral vessel supplying a specific
area of the brain) or hemorrhage inside the brain (Michael et al., 2020).
Cognition refers to the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience and the senses. It compasses all aspects of intellectual functions and processes; such as perception, attention, thought, intelligence, the formation of knowledge, memory, judgement and evaluation, reasoning and computation, problem solving and decision making, comprehension and production of language. Cognitive processes use existing knowledge and discover new knowledge (Von Eckardt, 1996). Cognitive dysfunction is a widely used term and has many different definitions but mainly it refers to general deficits in brain processes and cognitive abilities that affects learning, memory and sensory processing. It varies in severity from mild cognitive impairment to severe impairment which causes loss of independence in carrying out activities of daily living.
