Abstract

I/R is an initial interruption of arterial blood supply to an organ inducing hypoxia followed by restoration of blood flow and reoxygenation. This reflow phenomenon is known as I/R injury and explains the structural and functional changes that occur during restoration of blood supply after a period of ischemia. I/R is included in the pathology of different disorders such as myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea and individuals with sickle cell anemia. Hind limb ischemia is a life-threatening condition resulting from vascular occlusion or hypovolemia and is commonly found in patients with peripheral vascular disease. It can also lead to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Scutellarin is a flavonoid glycoside compound used as a traditional Chinese medicine with multiple pharmacological effects and clinical applications. It acts as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, antiplatelet aggregation and vasodilative effects. Several studies have reported the beneficial effects of scutellarin against the coronary heart diseases, such as angina, myocardial ischemia, hypertension and stroke. It has been widely used to treat cerebrovascular diseases, Alzheimer`s disease and diabetic vasculopathy. This study aimed to evaluate the role of scutellatrin in protection and/or prevention of the changes that may occur in the cardiac muscle due to hind limb I/R injury. All this were done via employment of several histological and immunohistochemical techniques.
