Abstract

Clinical training is an indispensable part of nursing education because it is conducted in clinics where students are involved in actual learning and get prepared for their nursing roles. Clinical training enables students to gain competence in the values, attitudes, knowledge and skills required by the nursing profession and therefore enable them to proceed to professional life. In other words, clinical training enables students to put their theoretical knowledge in practice, to gain competence in psycho motor and intellectual skills, to get involved in critical thinking, to define and solve problems, to make decisions, to participate in team work, to develop communicative skills, to get prepared for future roles, and to develop self-confidence. This study aimed to identify clinical training factors that hinder or facilitate nursing students’ learning and its effect on their clinical performance through achieving the following objectives: Assess nursing students’ perception regarding clinical training factors that hinder their learning. Assess nursing students’ perception regarding clinical training factors that facilitate their learning. Assess nursing students’ clinical performance level. Assess the relationship between clinical training factors that hinder or facilitate nursing students’ learning and their clinical performance. This study was carried out in two nursing secondary schools Secondary Nursing School and Sera-Ella in Secondary Nursing School at Govern ate. A descriptive correlation research design was used in this study. A consecutive sample of nursing students who accepted to participate in the study, enrolled in second and third grade in previous mentioned setting. Two instruments were used to collect data of this study; First instrument: Nursing students opinion regarding facilitating and hindering factors for learning during clinical training that consists of two parts: Part one: Academic characteristics (school’s name, scholastic grade, total grade of nursing in previous year and the reason for joining the nursing school was collected too). Part two: clinical training factors questionnaire; this questionnaire used to assess clinical training factors that hinder and facilitate nursing students’ learning. The questionnaire includes items regarding the following six main dimensions; Student preparation includes items, learning opportunities includes 15 items, student relationships includes items, characteristics of nurse teachers includes 5 items, facilities provided from hospital to support clinical training includes 15 and facilitates provided from school administration to support clinical training includes 8 items. Second instrument Clinical performance observational checklist; this observational checklist aimed to assess clinical performance of nursing students. It includes items related the following six main dimensions: Assessment 10 items, Nursing diagnosis 4 items, Planning 5 items, Implementation 11 items, Health education 5 items and Evaluation items. Reliability of the instruments: M Reliability of the two instruments tested by Cronbach’s Alps test, reliability of Nursing students’opinion regarding facilitating and hindering factors for learning during clinical training was (0.90) while the reliability of Clinical performance observational checklist was Results of the current study could be summarized as follow: • More than two third of study sample were perceived clinical training factors, while approximately one third of study sample) were not perceived clinical training factors. The majority of study sample) indicated that nursing students’ preparation, learning opportunities and characteristics of clinical nurse teacher are facilitating factors. Also, more than two third of study sample indicated that nursing students’ relationships are facilitating factor. On the other hand, more than half of study sample indicated that facilities provided from hospital are a hindering factor. Also, near two third of study sample mentioned that total facilities provided from school administration is a hindering factor. • ”Total characteristics of clinical nurse teacher” came at the first ranking with the percentage score (86.9). Besides the last ranking was related to ”Total facilities provided from school to support clinical training” with the percentage score • The highest percentage of the study sample (29.9/ 27.7) showed between very good to good performance level, while more than one fifth of study sample (21.7) showed an excellent performance level. Also, approximately one fifth of study sample (20.7) showed a poor performance level. • There was a highly positive statistically significant correlation between nursing students’ perception regarding clinical training factors and nursing students’ performance level. According to the study findings, it’s recommended through three levels:  At nursing school level Conduct an orientation program for nurse students before each training period to explain objectives, roles and responsibilities and discuss nurse students’ expectation. - Clarify for nursing students’ role expectations by using role models, role repetition, preceptors, and mentors. - Establish cooperation protocols with various hospitals to reduce the burden of overcrowding on hospitals to enhance nursing students’ performance levels. -Apply workshop for nursing teachers about how to overcome clinical training hindering factors. - Provide school library with the needed references for nursing students researches and study. - Provide schools’ laboratories with modern tools and technologies to help nursing students apply simulation to improve their clinical performance level. - Provide transportation to facilitate the transportation of nursing students to practical training areas. - Clinical instructor – Nursing students’ ratio should be appropriate.  At hospital level: - Promote collaboration between hospital staff and nursing school staff to facilitate nurse students’ induction to real work world through support, empowerment and motivation in clinical area. - Creating a healthy training environment is highly needed for nursing students by providing personal protective equipment and creating a professional relationship between students and the health team - Lecture hall must be provided in the clinical training areas to facilitate clinical instructor role in following up students’ performance by discussing researches, case studies, etc. - The infection control supplies should be available for nursing students.  At research level: Further researches are required to: - Develop new and creative strategies to overcome clinical training hindering factors due to enhance nursing students’ clinical performance level. -Study nursing schools’ principals and teachers’ opinion for implementing quality system in nursing schools. -Replicate this study in different nursing schools at Menoufia Governor ate.
