Abstract surgical drains have been avital step in draining the abdominal and thoracic cavities in many surgical procedures, therefore this study aimed to train nurses on preventing abdominal drains placements infection for postoperative patients at the Gastroenterology Surgical Center affiliated with Mansoura University.Though one group, pre-post-tests quasi-experimental study design on 50 on_duty convenience sample of nurses, with two structured self - administrated questionnaires to determine scoio- demographic and occupational characreristics ,and assess knowledge ,in addition to an observation checklist to assess performance .Results of the current study revealed that there was ahighly statistically significant difference in nurses ’total knowledge and performance score levels pre and post- training about preventing abdominal drains placements’infection for postoperative patients p<0.001,Based on the study results the researcher conclude that there is a significant improvement in nurses’ knowledge and performance about preventing abdominal drains placements infection for postoperative patients and there is decreasing number and types of isolated bacteria from abdominal drains placements’ swabs for postoperative patients after three months of the nurses’ training sessions’implementation . The researcher recommends scheduled on job training programs for surgical ward nurses on the prevention of abdominal drains placements infection for postoperative patients ; to update their knowledge and performance. |
