Abstract

Lumbosacral vertebrae degeneration has multiple methods of treatment, including conservative treatment, which is one of the most widely used methods, and surgical treatment, which the patient needs when there is an increase in pain or pain in one of the peripheral nerves.
Fixation of the vertebrae with posterolateral welding is one of the most widely used and simplest surgical methods.
But stabilizing the vertebrae with welding between the bodies of the vertebrae is better from a biological and mechanical standpoint.
Therefore, the study was conducted to compare the two methods, which are the posterior-lateral welding and the welding between the vertebral bodies from the back.
The study included 42 patients, and 21 patients were treated by a posterior-lateral welding, and 21 other patients were treated by a welding between the bodies of the vertebrae from the back, using an internal fixation method from the back.
The study was conducted at Assiut University Hospitals, and the necessary examinations were performed for all patients, and the required examinations were performed, including X-rays, CT scans, and general anesthesia for all cases.
The patient was followed up in outpatient clinics for a period of no less than one year by X-rays, Oswestry disability index, and visual analogue scale, which are among the best methods used for follow-up.
The study showed that the posterolateral welding method and the intervertebral welding method improve the patient’s clinical aspect and improve the mechanical stability of the spine, but the improvement in both respects is greater after intervertebral welding, which helps the patient to return to his normal life.
Therefore, this study recommends using the welding method between the vertebral bodies from behind in all cases of vertebral slippage.
