Abstract Cardiovascular disease is considered one of the most common causes of death globally. Myocardial infarction is a cardiovascular disease that severely threatens human health and life. It is defined as sudden ischemic death of myocardial tissue. In most cases, acute myocardial infarction occurs due to coronary artery thrombosis in the area of an atherosclerotic plaque. In particular, myocardial infarction can occur in patients with atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension and coronary heart disease. The diagnosis and detection of AMI requires using clinical history, findings on an ECG and serum cardiac biomarker values. Chemokines are a specific group of cytokines that direct the migration of leukocytes throughout the body, both under physiological and inflammatory conditions. Among the chemokine repertoire, the chemokine receptor–ligand pair, CCR6 and CCL20 is becoming recognized for its valuable potential in immunological research. CCR6 is expressed on monocytes, macrophages and both T and B cells. In humans, both CCR6 and CCL20 are expressed in atherosclerotic carotid and coronary plaques at increased levels compared with non-atherosclerotic coronary arteries. |
