Abstract Hyphaene thebaica (HT) is an African plant belongs to family arcaceae which gives edible fruits. In previous studies, HT has been reported to have therapeutic effects against hepatic and lung cancer cell lines as well as acute myeloid leukemia cells In this study, we introduce a line of evidence proving that the ethanolic extract from HT has a cytotoxic effect against multiple parental cancer cells and drug - resistant cancer cells through inducing apoptotic cell death. Furthermore, HT acts as DNA damaging agent by causing single and double strand breaks and by the overexpression of DNA damage marker gamma H2AX (γH2AX). The results of TOP1 relaxation and TDP1 suggested that HT ethanolic extract inhibits their activity which describes its antiproliferation by acting as dual TOP1 and TDP1 inhibitors. HT is an interesting cytotoxic plant and deserves more studies leading to new antineoplastic agents to fight cancer. |
