Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common, non-scarring, patchy loss of hair. Its pathogenesis is uncertain, although most evidence supports the hypothesis that AA is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease of the hair follicle. Osteopontin (OPN) is an acidic glycoprotein produced by immune cells, epithelial cells and osteoblasts that has been identified as an important molecule involved in tissue repair, inflammation and autoimmunity as well as tumor growth. Aims: The aim of the study was to assess the tissue expression of OPN messenger RNA (mRNA) in patients with AA in comparison to healthy individuals. Patients and Methods: Twenty eight patients with AA and twenty five age and sex matched healthy controls were enrolled in this case control study. The tissue expression of OPN mRNA was measured using real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique.
