Abstract

The study is aim at providing empirical data on the nature of urban farming and its implication on urban development in Kaduna metropolis, Nigeria. Data were derived from literature review, field surveys, satellite imageries and geographical information system technique. A total of 28 sample locations and 480 farmers were administered questionnaire in all the four Local Government Areas (LGA) of Kaduna metropolis using purposive sampling and snow ball technique. The results revealed that urban farming takes place both in locations inside the metropolis and at the urban fringe (Peri-urban) areas. Also wide variation exist amongst urban farmers interms of socio-economic characteristics of urban farmers, access to land, types of crops grown and in the typology of urban farms within the study area. The results also show both positive and negative implication of urban farming. The positive impact includes the continued increase of food production that serve as a means of food security, livelihood security, poverty reduction and of environmental benefits (green areas). The negative impact includes about 279 hectares of agricultural land is lost to urbanization annually, insecurity of tenure, health and environmental risks. This research recommends that the government should formulate policies that will encourage and regulate urban farming for sustainable urban development in the study area
