Abstract

Drug - induced nephrotoxicity is an extremely common condition and is responsible for a variety of pathological effects on the kidneys. Drug - induced acute renal failure (ARF) accounts for 20% of all ARF cases. Cisplatin (CIS), one of the most effective and potent anticancer drugs, is used in the treatment of a wide variety of both pediatric and adult malignancies. However, the chemotherapeutic use of cisplatin is limited by its serious side - effects, such as nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. The present study was performed to elucidate some of the mechanisms involved in the nephroprotective effects of captopril (Cap), montelukast (ML), and ellagic acid (EA) in experimentally cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Male adult sprague dawley rats were divided into (i) normal untreated rats, (ii) corn oil - treated rats, (iii) CIS - treated rats to serve as nephrotoxic control group, (iv) Cap60 + CIS treated rats, (v) Cap100 + CIS treated rats, (vi) ML10 + CIS treated rats, (vii) ML20 + CIS treated rats, (viii) EA10 + CIS treated rats, (ix) EA30 + CIS treated rats
