Abstract

The present study aims for monitoring and estimating three toxic air pollutants (TAPs) groups in the atmosphere of Greater Cairo. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbonyl compounds (CCs) were sampled and analyzed. Total suspended particulates (TSP) was collected from seven sites in Greater Cairo during the year 2008. The annual average concentration of TSP was 421.29æg/m³, which is about 4.5 times higher than the maximum allowable concentration set by the Egyptian Environmental Law No. 4, 1994 (90æg/m³). Sixteen priority PAHs were identified and quantified on TSP samples. The annual concentration of V 16 PAHs was 58.31ng/m³. Benzo(a)pyrene was the dominant PAHs species by a value of 10.72ng/m3. It was indicated that 62.61% of the total PAHs is carcinogenic. BaP-TEQ and BaP-MEQ was calculated to estimate ambient PAHs carcinogenic and mutagenic hazards. The estimated cancer risks from air pollution in this study highly exceeded the WHO health based guideline (8.7x10⁻⁵). Ambient CCs and VOCs samples were monitored at three sites during the years 2009 and 2010, respectively
