Abstract

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most common human cancers. It is the fourth most common cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and the second in women worldwide. E-cadherin is expected to be a useful biomarker associated with invasiveness and poor differentiation. In our study we tried to clarify the extent of expression and its relationship to clinicopathological parameters. This work included 50 cases of colorectal carcinoma obtained through collection of archived paraffin blocks of colonoscopic colorectal carcinoma. Thirty nine cases (78%) of studied cases showed positive expression of E-cadherin while eleven cases (22%) showed negative staining. Cases showed preserved pattern were 19 (38%), 20 cases showed heterogeneous pattern (40 %) and 11 cases showed lost pattern (22%). E-cadherin showed an insignificant relation with age and sex changes. A significant relationship was detected between E-cadherin expression in tumor cells and tumor differentiation. from our work we conclude that The decreased membranous expression of E-cadherin might be used as a prognostic marker to monitor patient with colorectal cancer
