Abstract The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS)activation is the milestone in ascites formation. The hypertonic saline solution(HSS) has attracted considerable interest over the last years in ascites control. Other therapeutic models and concepts have been introduced to overcome diuretic resistance and control ascites. A comparative, parallel, randomized, active-controlled study was performed to evaluate the inflammatory, metabolic, and renal effects of adding hypertonic saline infusion and/or etilefrine to oral diuretics therapy in cirrhotic patients with ascites.The study included 118 eligible cirrhotic patients with ascites who recruited between September 2017 and April 2020. A total of 90 patients were analyzed after receiving standard diuretic therapy (SDT) and either HSS infusion (n=25), or etilefrine (Vascon®) 5 mg tablets(n=25), or both (n=25), or SDT alone (n=15).
