Abstract

The overall purpose of this thesis is to study how chirped fiber Bragg grating can be used for chromatic dispersion compensation. The chromatic dispersion is the dominant limitation on the data rate and transmission distances of the radio-over-fiber’s systems. The fiber Bragg grating has many advantages over other chromatic dispersion compensating techniques, as it has low insertion loss, it’s cost efficient, moreover it doesn’t introduce non-linear effects even with high optical powers.
To the study the effect of chirped fiber Bragg grating on the performance of communication systems, a long-haul communication system with chirped fiber Bragg grating compensating technique is designed and simulated to select the optimum chromatic dispersion compensating technique that achieves the best performance in terms of the quality factor and bit error rate. The communication system extends to 100km with 10Gbps data rate in the 1550 nm window. Different types of chirped fiber Bragg grating are investigated with different chirp profiles, apodization functions and grating lengths. The performance of the long-haul communication system is significantly improved using the chirped fiber Bragg grating technique, hence the bit error rate can reach zero error per bit using a small piece of chirped fiber Bragg grating shorter than 5cm for 100km transmission distance.
