Abstract

Immune thrombocytopenia (ІTP) is among the most common causes of hemorrhagic manifestations in clinical practice and could serve as a model of autoimmune disease. The primary ІTP is an immune-mediated hematological disorder in which increased platelet destruction and decreased platelet production lead to thrombocytopenia, and thus mucocutaneous bleeding (Rodeghiero, et al., 2009).
In children, ITP is typically preceded by a viral illness, and while the majority of patients resolve spontaneously within 6 months of diagnosis, about 20% of patients develop chronic disease. The underlying mechanism distinguishing self-limited acute ITP from chronic ITP is unknown (Gernsheimer, 2009). Oxidative stress is involved in various stages of the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, and particularly in the etiological, regulatory and effector mechanisms of the autoimmune processes (Matsuuraa, et al., 2008).
The aim of the current study was to assess study the plasma level of (VNN1) in pediatric patients with ITP and to investigates its relation to the chronicity and severity of the disease. This study is a case control study included 50 patients with ITP and 30 free healthy control. It was conducted in pediatric department of Beni-Suef University hospital.
In conclusion the VNN1 level is significantly higher in ITP cases than healthy controls with good sensitivity and specificity for presence of ITP but it can’t differentiate the response to treatment or disease activity (not correlated with platelet count among ITP cases).
