Abstract

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), is the most common metabolic disorder of pregnancy. It is defined as the type of glucose intolerance that develops in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, resulting in hyperglycemia of variable severity causing maternal and fetal complications.Purpose of the study was to determine the effect of moderate exercise on fetal outcome in woman suffering from gestational diabetes.
Method:Thirty multiparous women in their third trimester of pregnancy diagnosed with GDM, aged from 25-40 years with body mass index ranged from 30-35 Kg/m2, were selected from obstetric Department of Shbin El-Kom Teaching Hospital and El-Menofya University Hospital. They were randomly assigned into two groups equal in number; group A (study group) (n=15) received insulin therapy, and performed aerobic exercise (in the form of walking on a treadmill (60-70% of MHR) for 30 minutes, 3 times /week for six weeks),and group (B) (control; group)(n=15) received insulin therapy only as in group (A).
Fetal weight and amniotic fluid index (AFI) were assessed before the beginning and after the end of six weeks of treatment for both groups, using ultrasonography.
Results: revealed that there was a highly statistically significant decrease in the mean value of fetal weight and AFI in both groups (A and B) (p = 0.0001). By comparing the results between both groups (A) and (B), it was revealed that there was a statistical significant decrease in the post-testing mean values of weight of the fetus, AFI in favor of group (A) than group (B) (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: It can be concluded that moderate-intensity exercise could prevent the increase in fetal weight and AFI in woman with GDM.
