Abstract

Background: Many trials had compared coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). With the advances in the interventional field, the usage of drug eluting stents make the choice of revascularization in diabetic patients with multivessel disease controversial. Methods: We assigned patients with diabetes and multivessel coronary artery disease to undergo either PCI with drug-eluting stents or CABG at National heart institute. The patients were followed up for 12 months. All patients were prescribed currently recommended medical therapies for the control of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, and glycated hemoglobin. The primary outcome was a composite of death, myocardial infarction, repeated revascularization or stroke. Conclusions: In patients with diabetes mellitus and multivessel CAD, comparison between CABG and PCI with DES showed similar mortality, post procedure MI and stroke. However PCI was associated with increased rate of repeat revascularization after 12 months
