Abstract

The hip joint is one of the largest and most important joints in our body; it{u2019}s a ball and socket joint that is freely moveble and weight bearing. The total hip replacement is indicated in many cases for the restoration of hip function; it can be performed through various approaches including posterior (conventional), lateral, anterolateral and direct anterior approaches. Recently, minimally invasive techniques involving smaller incisions have been developed and used widely by surgeons that has the potential for minimizing surgical trauma, pain and recovery time. In this review, many approaches to the hip are described with special focus on the direct anterior approach and the minimally invasive technique. The anterior approach was first described by Smith-Peterson in1940, and then was modified by Heuter in 1950. This approach is gaining popularity in total hip replacement due to its numerous advantages over other approaches including shorter recovery time, less incidence of complications and faster rehabilitation. Comparisons between the direct anterior approach versus lateral and posterior approaches revealed the superiority of the anterior approach
