Abstract

The purpose: of this study is to investigate the effect of virtual reality on power of antigravity muscles of lower limbs and functional ability in children with Down’s syndrome. Methodology: : Thirty children with Down’s syndrome participated in this study for 8 weeks. Their age ranged between 5 to 7 years, they were assigned randomly into two groups of equal number each group included 15 patients. group (A): received the selected physical therapy program with virtual reality group (B): received selected physical therapy program. Assessment was done before and after treatment by using Hand Held Dynamometer for antigravity muscles power and Growth Motor Function Measure scale for functional ability. Results: There was a statistically significant improvement in post bilateral (ankle plantar flexors, knee and hip extensors) in favor to group (A). On the other hand there was an improvement in post GMFM results in favor to group (A) with a percentage 6.38 % , However there was no significant difference between both groups. Conclusion: For children with Down’s syndrome, virtual reality resulted in an increase in power of antigravity muscles of the lower limbs more than selected physical therapy alone, so we can use virtual reality in physical therapy program
