Abstract

Aim:to investigate the effect of tooth type (premolar or molar) on the survival rate of occluso proximal carious lesions prepared with the atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) approach and restored with high viscous glass ionomer restorative material (Fuji IX GP). Methodology:A total of 60 patients of both genders were included in the study. Teeth were subdivided into two subgroups according to tooth type either premolar or molar. Excavation of carious lesion and preparation of the cavity walls and margins were done using ART instruments. Isolation for the field was achieved using cotton rolls. A matrix band, matrix holder and a wooden wedge were applied before restoration. The cavity was conditioned, rinsed then blotted dry. Glass ionomer capsules were mixed according to manufacturer{u2019}s instructions and inserted into the cavity. Excess material was removed, the occlusion was checked and finally the surface was coated with a layer of Vaseline. Restorations{u2019} evaluation was performed through digital photographs, direct and indirect clinical evaluations as well as radiographic records at baseline, and at follow up recalls (at three and six months) using ART criteria adopted for proximal restorations. Results:showed that, according to ART criteria even after six months, tooth type as well as gender predilection showed no statistically significant effect on the survival rate of the tested restorative material. Conclusions:Under the conditions of this study, the following conclusions could be withdrawn: Survival rate of occluso-proximal restorations was not affected by tooth type (premolars or molars) which were prepared with the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) approach. Gender does not influence the survival rate of proximal ART restorations
