Abstract

The present study included survey on digestive problems in 8503 dogs of different ages, breeds and sexes. Surveyed dogs were belonging to Cairo and Giza governorates which admitted to the teaching veterinary hospital, faculty of veterinary medicine, Cairo University from January 2013 to December 2014. Out of this number, there was 4438 dogs were recorded with health problems while there was 4065 dogs were apparently healthy which admitted either for vaccination or general health checkup. Prevalence of digestive problems was recorded 2413 cases out of 4438 cases (54.4% from the total diseased cases). Six common digestive problems were recorded included excessive salivation, regurgitation, vomiting, diarrhea, concurrent vomiting and diarrhea and constipation with prevalence of (8.5%), (2.1%), (13.5%), (20.2%), (9.2%), and (0.6%) respectively based on diseased number. Incidence of the causes of each problem was also recorded. A total number of 144 dogs of different breeds, ages and sexes were thoroughly examined in the present study which included 20 apparently healthy dogs and 124 digestive diseased dogs. Treatment was applied on 54 diseased dogs. Diseased dogs were divided into six groups included excessive salivation (18 cases), regurgitation (7 cases), vomiting (22 cases), diarrhea (33 cases), concurrent vomiting and diarrhea (30 cases), and constipation (14 cases). Clinical examination was performed on each case included respiration, pulse rates and rectal temperature. Diagnosis was made with aids of radiography, ultrasonography and gastrointestinal endoscopy. Hematobiochemical parameters were also assessed. Other laboratory tools were used in diagnosis such as rapid antigen test for detection of CDV and CPV infection. Fecal analysis was also applied to all cases. Treatment was applied for the causes of each problem and all parameters were reassessed after treatment
