Abstract

Methods: the study was conducted at center of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation, children’s hospital, Faculty of medicine, Cairo University; where 20 children on regular hemodialysis, 20 children post successful renal transplantation, and 20 as healthy controls were assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) for assessment of cognitive functions and using child behavior checklist (CBCL) for assessment of psychological behavior. Results: The study showed impaired cognitive functions in all subtests including the full scale IQ (FIQ), verbal IQ (VIQ), and performance IQ (PIQ)) among hemodialysis and post renal transplantation patients compared to healthy control. Also, impaired cognitive functions were signi{uFB01}cantly lower in the dialysis children compared to the post renal transplantation group. Children with chronic kidney disease either on hemodialysis or post successful renal transplantation may experience adverse psychological and behavioral problems. Post renal transplantation patients had internalizing problems, externalizing problems, aggression, somatic problems, attention problems, withdrawal problems and CBCL total problems more than hemodialysis patients. Children on hemodialysis had anxiety problems more than children with post renal transplantation. Conclusion: children on regular hemodialysis and post successful renal transplantation are suffering from impaired cognitive functions and also, they had several behavioral problems
