Abstract

The study included 30 patients from EL GIZA chest hospital diagnosed as COPD with acute exacerbation . Clinical assessment, some laboratories tests and sputum culture and sensitivity were done. Potential bacterial pathogens were isolated in more than two third of cases. The most common isolated bacteria were Streptococcus pneumoniae (43.3%) followed by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (10%), Haemophylous influenzae (6.7%) then Moraxella catarrhais and Acinetobacter spp. (3.3%) each one. The most effective antibiotic against the isolates as tested by disc diffusion method was quinolons. High resistance was reported to Penicillin and Erythromycin. A statistically significant relation was found between culture results and O2 desaturation ,leucocytosis , phyical character of sputum and direct smear examination, also there was a statistically significant relation between O2 desaturation and Streptococcus pneumoniae ,also there was a statistically significant direct correlation between culture result and leucocytosis while statistically significant inverse correlation between culture result and haematocrit value
