Abstract

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients exhibit abdominal obesity which
causes glucolipid metabolism disorders leading to reproductive problems. High-intensity interval
training (HIIT) is reported to improve endothelial function and insulin sensitivity. Research
proved the efficacy of cryolipolysis on fat lipolysis especially on abdominal area, which
improves insulin resistance (IR) and may lead to restoration of ovulation in PCOS population.
Though research on the effects of combining exercise and abdominal lipolysis is currently
lacking.
Purpose: This study aims to examine the effect of combining cryolipolysis and HIIT on women
manifested with PCOS.
Subjects and procedures: Sixty women diagnosed with PCOS participated in this study for
twelve weeks. They were randomly assigned into three equal groups. group (A) received
cryolipolysis and HIIT, group (B) received HIIT while group (C) didn‟t receive either of them.
Evaluation in the three groups was done through measuring IR by homeostatic model of
assessment (HOMA-IR), body mass index (BMI), body fat %, waist circumference (WC)
,visceral adiposity index (VAI) and female sex hormones (LH, FSH and LH/FSH ratio).
Results: Showed significant decrease in body fat%, BMI, WC, HOMA-IR, VAI, LH and
LH/FSH ratio in the group (A) and (B) post treatment compared with that pre-treatment (p <
0.01), while there was no significant difference in the group (C) between pre and post treatment
(p > 0.05). There was a significant improvement in FSH in the group (A) and )B( post treatment
compared with that pre-treatment (p < 0.01), while there was no significant change in the
group(C) (p > 0.05). Comparison between groups post treatment revealed a significant difference
(P< 0.05) in body fat %, BMI, VAI, HOMA-IR, LH, FSH and LH/FSH ratio in favor of group
(A) than either group (B) or (C), also in favor of group (B) than group (C) except for WC and
body fat % where the difference between group (B) and (C) was non-significant.
Conclusion: Combining cryolipolysis and HIIT adds more advantage to PCOS patients in
improving their BMI, VAI, WC, body fat %, IR and female sex hormones.
