Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different aerobic exercise intensity on bone mineral density and quality of life in postmenopausal osteoporotic women. Subjects: 60 postmenopausal osteoporotic women with mean age (56.5 ± 2.44 years) were investigated. They were randomly assigned into four groups equal in number; group (A) (Control group): fifteen postmenopausal women who received medical treatment only in the form of Calcium supplementation 1000mg and 1000 IU of vitamin D were given daily for 6 consecutive months as prescribed by their physician; group (B): fifteen postmenopausal women who performed mild intensity aerobic exercise (40% - 49% HR max) in addition they received the same medical treatment as group (A); group (C): fifteen postmenopausal women who performed moderate intensity aerobic exercise (50% - 69% HR max) in addition they received the same medical treatment as group (A) and group (D): fifteen postmenopausal women who performed high intensity aerobic exercise (70% - 75% HR max), in addition they received the same medical treatment as group (A). Each aerobic exercise session lasted 30 minutes, three times per week for 6 consecutive months for all participants in groups (B, C & D). Assessments of all participants in the four studied groups were carried out through the measurement of BMD of the lumbar spine in addition to the mini-osteoporosis quality of life questionnaire (OQLQ) at baseline and after 6 consecutive months.
Results: There was a significant increase of OQLQ in groups B, C and D (p= 0.001) when compared with its corresponding values before treatment while, there was no significant difference in group A (p= 0.317). Significant intergroup differences were found post intervention between each two groups. Also, there was a statistical significant increase in the value of T- score of BMD of the lumbar spine in both groups C and D (p= 0.002 & 0.011 respectively) when compared with its corresponding values before starting the treatment, while, there was no statistical significant difference in both groups A and B (p=0.916, p= 0.068 respectively), After the end of the treatment. And there was a significant intergroup differences were found post intervention between all groups, except between both groups (B vs D; P= 0.950). Conclusion: It could be concluded that moderate and high intensity aerobic exercises are more effective than mild aerobic exercise in improving bone mineral density, as well as quality of life in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis
