Abstract

Acne vulgaris (AV) is common chronic inflammatory disorder of pilosebaceous unit. Although various mechanisms have been indicated in the etiopathogenesis of AV, the exact pathology is still unknown (Korkmaz & Fiçicioğlu, 2018). There are numerous factors in the etiopathogenesis of AV. The main factors are Inflammation, abnormal keratinization, microbial flora changes, and increased sebum production (Suh & Kwon, 2015). The sequence in which these events occur is still not certain but recentely, inflammation has been suggested as the initial factor. The mechanisms behind the beginning and maintenance of the inflammatory response are not fully known, but propionibacterium acne plays an important role in the mechanisms (Stein Gold 2013 & Bhat et al,2017). The aim of this study was to evaluate serum level of calprotectin in acne vulgaris patients and to correlate its level with disease severity. This research included fourty five patients diagnosed with acne vulgaris and fourty five healthy controls who were comparable in age and sex to the cases category. Results of the study: There was a statistically significantly higher proportion of high glycemic diet and positive family history of acne in acne group vs. Control subjects. There was a significant higher serum calprotectin in acne group vs. control subjects. There was a significant positive correlation between GAGS score and age, height, weight, BMI, acne duration and serum calprotectin. There also was a significant positive correlation between GAGS grades and age, height, weight, BMI , acne duration, and serum calprotectin.
