Abstract

The study area is located on the northwestern part of the Western Desert between31°5’19.543” and 31°0’54.974” North, and 28°25’33.039” and 29°36’20.642” East as shown in (Fig. 1.1), bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Alexandria to the east Zawyet El Awuama town to the west and the coastal ridge to the south. The area is formed ofsedimentary rocks, of the Tertiary and Quaternary geologic ages. The northwestern coast of Egypt can be subdivided into the following three geomorphicunits: Coastal plain which is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north and by the plateau to the south, taking east–west orientation. The width of the coast varies from one site to another as it is controlled by the geologic formations. Secondly, pedomental plain the interference zone between the coastal plain and the plateau, where the rains, flow from the plateau and collect at the depressions. Thirdly, Miocene rocky plateau, mostly covered by a thin layer of soil (Shalaby and Tateishi, 2007).
