Abstract This randomized split mouth clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of low level laser therapy on displacement of orthodontic miniscrews and on the gingival inflammation around it. A total of 12 patients were recruited based on clear eligibility criteria. The patients’ mouths were randomly assigned to two sides; experimental side and control side. Each side received self-drilling miniscrew a total of 24 miniscrews. The experimental side received 4 laser applications with 72 hours interval between each. The canine retraction was done after 14 days of miniscrew insertion and after finishing laser application. The displacement of miniscrews head and tail was measured using a CBCT on experimental and control sides. Also, gingival inflammation was checked every appointment on both sides and any changes were evaluated using the modified gingival index. The data obtained in this study was subjected to Student t-test, Paired t-test and Mann Whitney test at P ≤0.05. 6.2. Conclusions According to the findings of the current study evaluating the effect of LLLT on miniscrew displacement and the inflammation around its site, the following conclusions can be obtained: 1- Both experimental and control sides showed displacement of the miniscrews, measured on CBCT image of the maxilla. 2- No statistically significant difference in miniscrew displacement between the study sides. 3- Miniscrew displacement is more obvious in the head than in the tail of the miniscrew. 4- LLLT is effective in reducing the gingival inflammation at the miniscrews sites. 6.3 Recommendations Further studies are required to confirm the effects of LLLT on miniscrew displacement with a large sample size and long study period. |
