Abstract

Egypt has one of the most complicated water resources management plant through a network of canals and drains. With a very high rate of population growth and new developments, the water demands in Egypt increase dramatically without any increase in the water resources which forces decision makers to reuse wastewater which affects the public health at the end of the drainage system into the mediterranean Sea and northern lakes like Elburullus lake). Elburullus lake receives about 3.86 billion cubic meters per year of drainage water. The flushing of the lake through the bougaz is not sufficient to improve the water circulation and quality inside the lake. Elburullus lake is an important source for fishery, together with the other northern lakes like Maryut lake, Manzala lake and Edku Lake, about 185000 tons of fish are produced yearly. These sources of fish are threatened with water quality and water circulation issues. The scope of the current research is to investigate the baseline situation inside the lake using a numerical model (Delft3D). Both the developed hydrodynamic and water quality models were calibrated to examine the effect of eight enhancement proposals on different water quality substances inside the lake. A decision matrix was established to evaluate the proposed mitigation measures and facilitate the decision-making process. The results showed that the best measure is to pump seawater into the lake at two different locations to enhance the mixing process, decreasing the pollution and limit the stagnant locations inside the lake more than other enhancement scenarios
