In this thesis we are investigating the feasibility of the modification of certain polymeric species by emulsion polymerization induced by radiation namely poly glycydyl methacrylate (PGMA) to act as an anion exchanger for sorption of iodide ions from aqueous solutions in comparison to the commercially available ones, the epoxy groups of this resin have been opened and modified into amino groups in order to give PGMA polymer ion exchange resin in an anionic form. The apparent capacity of this resin was compared with other commercial anion exchange resins namely dowex (1-8X) of the grain size distribution (100-200 mesh) and Biorex-5, a commercial anion exchange resin which is used for extraction of radio-iodide (I-131) from the Egyptian radioactive isotope production facility which is produced for pharmatheutical uses with grain size distribution (100-200 mesh), the synthetic PGMA resin showed to have promising results for radio-iodide adsorption. Kinetics and isotherm studies of radio-iodide (I-131) adsorption by batch technique were taken into consideration in our study. The physical properties of all resins has been examined by fourier transformer infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) during all stages of ion exchange such as in the chloride, hydroxyl, and iodide forms and eluted chloride form
