Abstract

This experimental study was designed to investigate the possible curative effects of beta receptor blockers & muscarinic receptor agonists on osteoporotic model in adult female albino rats.Materials and methods: Fifty six mature female albino rats, weighing (150-250 gm) were used, divided to 7 groups. group 1(control group), group 2 (OVX untreated), group 3(ALN was administered orally in a dose of 3 mg/kg), group 4(PRO was administered orally in a dose of 5 mg/kg), group 5 (Prostig was administered orally in a dose of 12.5 mg/kg), group 6(ALN+PRO were administered in the same previous doses), group 7(ALN+Prostig were administered in the same previous doses). Treatment was started after 4 weeks of induction of osteoporosis and lasted for 8 weeks. At the end of treatment, serum Bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BSALP) was measured and histopathological examination, assessment & scoring were done to all groups. Results: Rats of group 2 (ovx untreated) showed a significant increase in BSALP and significant reduction in cortical bone thickness compared to group 1. Alendronate, propranolol and prostigmine treatment as well as their combinations; all produced significant decrease in serum BSALP level and significant increase in cortical bone thickness as well as low histopathological score. Adding ALN to either PRO or Prostig produced a greater improvement rather than each drug alone
