Abstract

The aim of the present study was to assess the accuracy of cavernous artery intima - media thickness (IMT) measurement during penile color duplex ultrasonography (CDU) study as an indication of endothelial dysfunction, and its accuracy in diagnosing vasculogenic erectile dysfunction, as compared to cavernous artery peak systolic velocity (PSV). The study was carried out on group of married male patients aging from 20 to 60 years, all patients were complaining of erectile dysfunction (ED), defined as the consistent inability to obtain and or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual intercourse. All subjects underwent full medical history taking and physical examination, all subjects were studied by penile color duplex ultrasonography. During examination by color duplex ultrasonography equipped by linear probe, the intima media thickness (IMT) was calculated in the common carotid artery by placing the electronic cursors on the common carotid artery 1 cm distal to the carotid bifurcation, measuring the space between two interfaces (tunica intima and tunica media). Bilateral repeated measurments of common carotid artery was done. Cavernous artery IMT was measured in the proximal medium and distal tract of penile cavernous artery, by measuring the space between two interfaces (tunica intima and tunica media) before intracavernosal injection (ICI) and after intracavernosal injection (ICI) of 0.25 ml of quadmix which is a combination of four drugs; Papaverine(15mg/ml), Phentolamine(0.5mg/ml), PGE1(5æg/ml) and Atropine(0.2mg/ml)
