Abstract

The aim of this cross sectional study was to assess lung ultrasonography as an alternative to bedside radiography for the diagnosis of childhood pneumonia. The study was performed on 50 children admitted during the period from June 2015 to August 2016 in the pediatric wards and PICUs of Cairo university pediatric hospital presenting with clinical picture of pneumonia. Chest X- rays, lung US and C.T. chest were done. Radiological findings demonstrated lung consolidation in all 50 patients (100%) by CT chest, 49 patients (98%) by LUS and 48 patients (96%). Pleural effusion was found in 8 patients (16%) by CT chest, all of which were detected by LUS (100%), however the 8 patients detected by X-ray had 3 false positive cases (specificity 62.50%), LUS was helpful in detecting lung pleurisy (specificity 100%), while X-rays were not helpful. 70% of patients needed sedation before CT scanning as compared to non for LUS. Lung ultrasound is a simple and reliable tool that can be used by the clinician in the case of suspected pneumonia. It is as reliable as CXR, can be easily repeated at the patient’s bedside and carries no risk of ionizing radiation
