Abstract The objective of this study was to assess the effect of topical diltiazem (1%) and enalaprilat (0.1%) each in a dose of 0.1 ml once daily from the 8th to the 14th day of induction, with the commonly used drug timolol (0.5%) in a dose of 0.1 ml, for treatment of the elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) induced in rabbit by a single subconjunctival injection of 7 mg/ml betamethasone in a dose of 0.6 ml. Betamethasone caused significant elevation in the IOP as it reached 178 % of the normal values during two weeks. Timolol reduced the intraocular pressure to be 134 % of the normal values without affecting the altered biochemical parameters. Topical administration of diltiazem and enalaprilat elicited ocular hypotension that reached 116% and 122 % of the normal values respectively. The changed levels of GSH, TAC, MDA and CHE activity were modulated by enalaprilat while diltiazem had significant effect only on the altered GSH level induced by betamethasone. Histopathological assessment showed that enalaprilat significantly reduced the corneal edema and diltiazem significantly reduced the spaces between the stromal collagenous bundles produced by betamethasone |
