Abstract

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common type of cancer among women world-wide and leading cause of cancer related deaths. Distant metastasesare responsible for the majority of cancer-related deaths. Basigin (BSG) also known as extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) or cluster of differentiation 147 (CD147) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BSG gene. Basigin is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, with a structure related to the putative primordial form of the family. As members of the immunoglobulin superfamily play fundamental roles in intercellular recognition involved in various immunologic phenomena, differentiation, and development, basigin is thought also to play a role in intercellular recognition. Objectives: Investigation of immunohistochemical expression of CD147 in non-invasive and invasive ductal carcinomas and correlation of this expression with the clinico-pathological aspects of the tumors. Materials and methods: 50 formalin fixed paraffin embedded BC tissue sections were randomly collected. All the available data were collected from the patients{u2019} reports. The paraffin blocks were sectioned, stained with hematoxylin&eosin stainsfor histologic evaluation. Additional sections were immunostained with CD147.Results: CD147 (EMMPRIN) immunohistochemical expression was positive (48%) mild in 11 cases (22%), moderate in 8 cases (16%), severe in 5 cases (10%), and negative in 26 cases (52%). and showed statistically significant correlation with any of the studied parameters (P value < 0.005).
