Abstract

Objective: to assess prevalence of adenovirus and bocavirus in hospitalized children with community acquired respiratory tract infection admitted to general wards or Pediatric intensive care unit, possible clinical features, laboratory findings, complications and whether it{u2019}s associated with increase mortality and hospital stay. Subjects and Methods: We collected nasopharyngeal swab samples, demographic data and, clinical data from children under five years of age who presented with RTI at Abu El Reesh hospital during winter season. The received swabs processed and viral testing was done by real time multiplex PCR A cross sectional study conducted on children diagnosed with acute Lower Respiratory tract infection and measured in 168 patients within 48 hours after admission. Analysis of the demographic data, clinical, laboratory, radiological findings, complications and outcome between adenovirus positive group, bocavirus positive group and non adeno non boca group. Results: 168 children were included from October 2014 to February 2015,about thirty patients(17.85%) had adenoviral infection mainly at January(37%) and about fourteen patients (8.33%) had human bocaviral infection mainly at December (29%).the most common clinical features of AdV positive-group were fever, wheezes (93.3%), tachypnea (93.8%), nasal congestion (86.7%), and the most common clinical features of hBov-postive group were fever, tachypnea (92.9%), wheezes (78.6%), respiratory secretions (57.1%). The mean SD of duration of hospital stay in AdV patients was 3.9 ± 4.68 days while it was 4.57 ± 3.27 days in patients of hBoV. (86.7%) of AdV- positive patients were admitted at general wards and (13.3%) were admitted at PICU, while (78.6%) of hBoV-positive patients were admitted at general wards and (21.4%) were admitted at PICU.about(93.3%) of AdV-positive patients were discharged,(6.7%) died, and (85.7%) of hBoV-positive patients were discharged, (14.3%) died
