Abstract

W
astewater treatment is a process of intensive use of resources, mainly energy, which accounts for 15 to 40% of the operating costs in conventional wastewater treatment systems, with the expected demographic increase and the restrictive trend in quality standards for effluent discharge, the energy consumption tends to increase if there are no changes in the processes, wastewater is liquid waste discharged by domestic residences, commercial properties, industry, agriculture which often contains some contaminants that result from the mixing of wastewater from different sources, the water discharged is found highly organic in nature consisting of easily biodegradable sugars soluble starch, ethanol and volatile fatty acids (Bhadania., 2018).
The primary aim of any occupational health and safety program is the prevention of accidents and illness, which employs knowledge as the principal tool, only accurate knowledge of the risks and adequate training in handling them can enable the worker to adopt appropriate behavior in a hazardous working environment, a successful accident prevention program depends on leadership by the employer and safe work habits and practices by the employees (Magoro, 2017).
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of occupational health program on workers’ knowledge and performance regarding personal protective equipment and first aid in sewage treatment plant. To achieve the study objectives,A quasi-experimental design had been conducted at the Belquas Sewage Treatment Plant in Shoubra district.
A purposive sample technique used and this technique followed for data collection until its completion. 100 workers included in the study, starting from 1/6/2020 to 30/1/2021. It has been done through two tools: a structured interviewing questionnaire sheet to study occupational health program effect regarding occupational hazards, safety measures and first aid on the workers’ knowledge, workers’ performance sheet regarding personnel protective equipment and first aid.
The present study revealed that:
• About 43% of the workers aged more than 50 years old, and 36% of them aged 40 to less than 50 years old. where 87% were married, 21% of them had a secondary educational level. Also, 54% of them had more than 5 members in their families and 64% of them had not enough family needs.
• 41% of the workers were technical operators, and all of them (100%) adhered to a daytime-work. Also, 73% of them had more than 10 years of experience. 90% of them worked for 6 to 8 hours daily.
• Add, 15% of the workers have skin inflammation, 43% of them had previous surgery,24% of workers had diabetes mellitus, 84% of them done follow up in hospitals affiliated to the health insurance. 41% of workers done complete blood count test, 52% of them used medication for chronic disease, 30% of them used Anti-hypertensive drugs.
• The study illustrated that 3% of workers have total good knowledge regarding occupational health before program increased to 94% of them after program implementation.
• There was a highly statistically significant difference between workers’ knowledge regarding occupational health before and after program implementation (Pvalue <0.01).
• Concerning workers’ performance, 10% of workers have total satisfactory performance before program, increased to 97% of them after program implementation.
• There was a highly statistically significant difference between workers’ performance regarding occupational health before and after program implementation(Pvalue <0.01).
• There was strong statistically significant relations between workers’ knowledge and performance during pre-occupational health program implementation As, 85% and more of those with poor level of knowledge, had unsatisfactory level of performance (P <0.005**).
• In addition, there was strong statistically significant relations between workers’ knowledge and performance during post occupational health program implementation. As, 93% and more of those with good level of knowledge, had satisfactory level of performance (P <0.005**).
• The study indicates a strong statistically significant correlation between workers’ knowledge and performance regarding occupational hazards, safety measures and first aid before and after program implementation (P <0.000**).
