Abstract

Purpose:To develop normative data for {u2018}Meibomian Gland Dysfunction{u2019} parameters, using the {u2018}Non-contact Meibography{u2019} technique of the {u2018}Sirius CSO{u2019} machine, in an Egyptian population sample, and to detect any correlation between age and/or gender with the degreeand/or percentage of meibomian gland loss (MGL). Methods:This is an observational, cross-sectional, analytic study, in which 104 Egyptian volunteers, of bothgenders, presenting to theDiagnostic and Laser Unit of Cairo University Hospital, were included. Patients were divided into 6 age groups (10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60 and 60-70 years). Both upper lids were examined, using the non-contact meibography instrument of the 2Sirius CSO3 machine. Each eyelid was given a degree of MGL, which was calculated by the software of the machine. Degree 0 (0-10%), degree 1 (10-25%), degree 2 (25-75%), and degree 3 (75-100%). Results:The percentage of MGL in the right upper lid ranged from 11.10% to 68.40% with a mean of 30.90±12.58%. The percentage of MGL in the left upper lid ranged from 9.90% to 65.0% with a mean of 32.55±11.83%. Average percentage MGL for both upper lids ranged from 11.60% to 60.10% with a mean of 31.72±11.35%. Thirty-four volunteers had first-degree MGL in their right upper lid, representing 32.7%. The remaining 67.3% had second-degree loss(including 70 volunteers). One volunteer had zero-degree MGL in left upper lid which represented one percent, 28 volunteers had first-degree loss representing 26.9%, and the remaining 72.1% all had second-degree loss (including 75 volunteers)
