Abstract

There is not much information available about incidence of awareness here in our Kasr Al-Ainy hospital, Cairo, Egypt. The aim of this study is to determine and compare the incidence of intra operative awareness during general anaethesia in both neurosurgery and ear, nose and throat surgery theatres in Kasr Al-Ainy hospital. The problem of awareness first became clinically important during the 1940s after the introduction of curare, and the practice of {u2018}balanced{u2019} anaesthesia. With administration of neuromuscular blocking agents, it was possible for patients to be conscious but unable to respond to environmental stimuli. In western countries, the overall published incidence of awareness (with or without pain) has steadily decreased from 1.2% in the 1960s to around 0.15% in the early part of this century
