Abstract

Objective : To study the Doppler indices of the main fetal pulmonary artery, ( pulsatility index(PI), resistance index(RI), S/D ratio,PSV and the acceleration-time/ejection-time ratio(At/Et) ) and their role in predicting respiratory distress syndrome(RDS) in patients undergoing elective Ceserean section of gestational age between 38 and 39 weeks. Methods : A prospective observational cross sectional study as developed, in which 98 pregnant women that will have an elective ceserean section at gestational age 38 and 39 weeks were selected, underwent fetal pulmonary artery flow velocity measurements, including systolic/diastolic ratio, pulsatility index, resistance index, Peak systolic volume and acceleration-time/ejection-time ratio were obtained using spectral Doppler ultrasound. Then observing the percentage of the development of neonatal RDS. RESULTS: There was a direct correlation between the At/Et ratio in the fetal pulmonary artery velocimetry waveform and development of neonatal RDS.The cut-off value for At/Et for RDS in subjects of our study=0.311 with sensitivity 100% and specificity=58.6%. Conclusion : An elevated At/Et ratio in the fetal pulmonary artery is associated with the subsequent development of RDS in neonates
