Abstract

The main contributor to the pain experienced after abdominal surgery is pain from the incision made in the abdominal wall. The transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is a peripheral nerve block to the nerves supplying the anterior abdominal wall (T6 to L1). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant in TAP block on postoperative analgesia and morphine consumption as well as stress response surgery. In conclusion, dexmedetomidine decreased postoperative VAS scores and morphine consumption without complications and increased time to first rescue analgesia but did not affect the stress response to surgery when compared to the control group
