Abstract

Business Process Management (BPM) is a holistic management approach that aims at aligning the organizations{u2019} business processes with the needs of their clients. In order to achieve this, BPM uses a systematic approach to continuously improve business process{u2019}s effectiveness and efficiency. Compliance checking is an important area because without it, organizations may face a lot of problems starting with litigations risks that may affect the quality of the organizations services to consumers. So it is an essential matter to ensure compliance of business processes over the entire business process (BP) lifecycle; especially at the runtime phase.Monitoring is achieved by listening to events generated from business process execution. In this regard, there are several frameworks that enable the monitoring based on variants of event processing technologies. Most of these frameworks presume a rich activity lifecycle model for the execution of tasks within business processes. However, most of process execution engines support simpler lifecycle models. Thus, these frameworks fall short in monitoring compliance for such engines due to missing needed input events. In this research, we present a middleware layer that maps different execution engines{u2019} lifecycles states to a reference lifecycle model. Also, unmatched and missing events will be derived from execution engines{u2019} states using complex event processing (CEP) techniques
