Abstract

Ocular toxoplasmosis occurs in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients, congenitally or postnatally, no clear distinction between disease entities can be observed. The aim of this study is to correlate the immunological antibodies profiles of Toxoplasma gondii with ocular lesions in patients suffering from chorioretinitis or uveitis. Patients were subjected to full ophthalmic examination, including best corrected visual acuity, intra ocular pressure measurement anterior segment examination, and fundus examination. Serum samples were collected from the patients to be examined for serum levels of specific anti-Toxoplasma antibodies including, IgG, IgM, IgA and IgG avidity. Also tear samples were collected from the patients to be examined for non specific and specific Toxoplasma secretory IgA in a cross sectional study included 100 patients with clinical manifestations suggestive of posterior uveitis and chorioretinitis. It was found that, Toxoplasma positive cases tend to have higher percentage of anti-toxoplasma IgG avidity and higher level of anti-toxoplasma specific IgA than negative cases. Patients with viteritis have higher levels of anti-toxoplasma IgM, and higher percentage of anti-toxoplasma IgG avidity. Patients with retinitis have higher level of anti-toxoplasma IgA and lower percentage of anti-toxoplasma IgG avidity. Patients with macular edema have lower level of anti-toxoplasma specific lacrimal IgA, while patients with viterous hemorrhage have higher level of anti- toxoplasma specific lacrimal IgA. Patients with chorioretinal scar have higher level of anti-toxoplasma IgA. positive correlation was recorded between age and anti-toxoplasma IgG and anti-toxoplasma IgA. Negative correlation was found between anti-toxoplasma specific lacrimal IgA and Best Corrected Visual Acuity
