Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and adherence of HCWs to standard precautions and to determine the prevalence and the risk factors of sharp injuries in HCWs in Beni-Suef university hospital. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted to assess the knowledge and adherence of health care workers to standard precautions. It also assessed prevalence, and risk factors of occupational exposure to sharp injuries in Beni-Suef university hospital. The target population of the study was All Health Care workers of Beni-suef university hospital (physicians and nurses from all departments, laboratory and radiology technicians, and waste disposal workers). A self-administered structured questionnaire was prepared in Arabic language used for data collection, and then it was pilot tested. It was formed of 4 sections (sociodemographic data of participants, Standard precautions knowledge questionnaire, Standard precautions adherence questionnaire, and prevalence of sharp exposure to sharps injury). Results:This study revealed the following: The mean age of participants was (29.51± 4.91), and males represented 51.9% of participants Nurses represented 59% of participants compared to 29% physicians, 7.5% technicians, and 3.5% workers.  About 80% of participants know what the standard precautions are.  About 95% of participants know that they should perform hand hygiene after contact with blood, also 90% know that hand hygiene should be performed between different patients  Only 35% always perform hand hygiene between different patients, and 29% always perform hand hygiene after removing of gloves.  The mean of knowledge score of the standard precautions knowledge questionnaire (SPKQ) is (14.29 ±2.88) and mean of adherence score of the standard precautions adherence questionnaire (SPAQ) is (54.69 ±11.09).  There was a significant moderate positive correlation between standard precautions knowledge and adherence with correlation coefficient (r) 0.303.  The prevalence of previous exposure to sharps injury is 59.3%.  Nearly 60% of participants injured with syringe in their last exposure, and the majority of injuries was in fingers.  There was a statistically significant difference between the injured and non-injured group regarding the number of night shifts per week with increased risk of injury with having 2 nightshifts per week.  There was a significant relationship between the prevalence of sharp injuries and knowledge and adherence to standard precautions. The prevalence of sharps injury was inversely related to the knowledge and adherence to Standard precautions.
